DIGITAL MUSIC PRODUCTION & SOUND DESIGN

w/ Kimathi Moore
http://www.last.fm/music/Kimathi+Moore
http://www.myspace.com/kimamoore/blog/202406604
Adults & Students Welcome

Wednesday’s at 4pm beginning March 2nd
$20 per session or $120 for all seven sessions
This workshop accepts ongoing enrollments.

My name is Kimathi Moore and I’m a traditional & electronic musician, experimental sound artist and have been involved in the electronic music field for over 25 years. Coming from an international background and being born in Paris, France, I was raised in an international environment in which music was always a part of. Because of my parent’s careers I’ve also lived in several countries (West Africa, Caribbean) where I was immersed in their respective cultures. In that, my passion and ear for sound experimentation grew in of its own. Since, I’ve been involved in music and electronics and have always sought to teach others how to explore their own creativity in this area; whether it is beat making or pure sound experimentation, I’m highly interested in teaching others how to explore themselves. It represents a huge part of our future as a whole in terms of new artistic and technological developments.

This will be a course designed to gain a solid foundation in electronic music production as its done in Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live and Reason, and some basics will cover sound design (manipulation of audio elements). The course will consist of 7 classes given once a week, 1 to 1/1/2 hours per class.

Throughout the course the student will learn the basics of sound creation and how to import it (sample) from a live or prerecorded format into programs like Ableton Live and or Reason and use it as a compositional tool. Afterward the student will learn how to use the on-board midi instruments (drums and virtual synthesizers) to make basic rhythms and melodies and then learn how to use these in conjunction with the program’s special sound effects and the imported sounds/samples, thus adding lots of character to a musical piece. In addition students will learn basics in musical arranging, proper mixing to achieve a well balanced sound and the exporting of songs in basic audio formats, ie; mp3,wave, aiff. At the end of the course the students will know how to express their creativity digitally and have an overall good grasp of musical technology. As a project students will be asked to individually complete a song or several on their own.
